Music = Practice

No practice, no music. If you practice music everyday, 7 days a weeks, 365 days a year then you are setting up yourself to be an amazing musician in 5 to 10 years.  If you don’t practice, 5 to 10 years of music lessons won’t get you that far. There is no one better than myself to vouch for this. I learnt music for 8 years from a wonderful teacher. The problem was, I never practiced regularly, practicing daily was just a dream.

Practice, practice, practice. Practice makes “improvement”. Practice doesn’t make perfect, it makes improvement, says Les Brown. I agree with him. When we look at “improvement”, it just seems doable, it just is more palatable. “Perfect” on the other hand is very cool but it’s also scary.

Practice daily to make small improvements and over time you will amaze yourself and others. You may have heard the theory that if you practice anything for 10,000 hours you can be the expert in that domain (Malcom Gladwell, Outliers). I don’t know if it works and many of us may never know because it’s a very long time horizon. We are talking 3 hours of practice everyday for 10 years roughly. It does call out for the amount of dedication and effort ones needs to put in to get to be an overnight success.

Let’s go practice the first hour of the 10,000 hours, repeat tomorrow. Good luck, see you at the 10,000th hour.
