Throughout their student years, regardless of degree program, they are very involved in department ensembles and in local and regional music activities. In addition, all music students perform degree recitals.
Academics: Each year, approximately 33% of music majors achieve dean’s list status.
Student Successes: Students in the Department of Music demonstrate their talent through their successes in academics, research and performance.
2013
Music education major Amy Schwarz presented a research poster entitled “Classical Connections” at the Indiana Music Educators Association (IMEA) professional development conference on Jan. 19, 2013, at the Grand Wayne Center in Fort Wayne. Schwarz’ research grew out of her Chapman Scholars senior project during Fall 2012 in which she arranged recitals by IPFW student musicians in area retirement communities. After each recital the audience members filled out surveys indicating their level of enjoyment of the music, as well as information about their early musical training and experience. While the research did not show a significant connection between early music education and enjoyment of the music, there was a connection between concert attendance as young people and current interest in concert attendance.
Caleb Stuckey (CAA student, age 16) – placed first in the Junior division at the Indiana Music Teachers Association (IMTA) Hoosier Auditions, at Butler University in Indianapolis. As the state winner, he is invited to perform at the IMTA State Conference in November.
Mario Cervantes (Music Technology Major, sophomore) received an Honorable Mention in the Collegiate Division.
Hope Arthur, Mario Cervantes, Alec Rajcany, Jason Simon, Jordan Tomecek (IPFW Music Majors) and Caleb Stuckey (IPFW CAA student) performed at the Indiana Music Teachers Association Germanfest Recital at First Wayne Street United Methodist Church.
Caleb Stuckey won the second prize ($400 cash award) at the IPFW Gene Marcus Piano Competition, Senior Division, June 9. He also performed at a master class by Dr. Caio Pagano, Regent’s Professor of Piano at Arizona State University, June 11.
Jason Simon (senior piano performance major) performed at the History Center’s annual banquet, at the History Center Ballroom. He also presented a chamber music recital during the IPFW Gene Marcus Piano Camp, collaborating with string players Brian Klickman (senior cello performance major, Cleveland Institute of Music), Aaron Mossburg (graduate of Oberlin Conservatory of Music as a viola performance major), Caleb Mossburg (graduate of IU-Bloomington, violin performance major) and Rachel Mossburg (incoming student at Oberlin Conservatory as a viola performance major), performing Dvorak’s Quintet in A Major, Op. 81, as well as Hamilton Tescarollo performing Mozart’s Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major.
Ashlee Beth Bickley’s student Okara Imani, a double major in music performance, with a concentration in voice and music therapy, is the new Miss IPFW for 2013 and will be representing IPFW in the Miss Indiana pageant in June. “I believe a large part of her success in pageants has to do with the talent portion,” explained Bickley. Imani sang “At Last” for the Miss IPFW talent portion and will be singing another jazz standard for the Miss Indiana pageant. Imani’s platform is entitled “We Can Do More to Treat Veterans, and Music Can Help.”
