At least on more than two occasions I was part of a discussion on if Hindustani is less rigid than Carnatic, giving better scope for artists to be creative. On the contrary, many feel that Carnatic is very structured and one needs to be highly disciplined to gain control over the raagas.
I believe that both styles of music have their beauty and both offer tremendous scope for improvisation.
The next time someone says Carnatic is too rigid, my good word to them is “heard of manodharma?”
